Inspiration and design of the Purple Micarta friction folder

The Purple Micarta friction folder AsmoD is a handcrafted folding knife made entirely by hand. It is an entry-level model in the workshop’s folding-knife collection. This design returns to the oldest type of folding knife: no spring and no mechanical detent. The blade stays in position through controlled friction, adjusted by tightening the pivot screw. Known for its simplicity, this format remains one of the most widely tolerated under international knife laws.

Lightweight and without a metal frame, it goes straight to the essentials with a modern design: a broken spine for the palm, a recess ahead of the pivot to position the index finger, a stylised screw and a strong contrast between the purple Micarta handle and the complementary false-piece element. A role-playing die fitted at the back of the knife gives each example its signature. Depending on the face shown, the name becomes AsmoD6, AsmoD10, AsmoD20… A deliberate touch of humour, because geek can be chic.

Mechanism

• The friction folder has neither spring nor mechanical detent. Retention relies solely on friction between the blade and the handle, adjusted by tightening the pivot screw. This old principle reinforces the handcrafted feel of the knife while providing smooth opening and closing.

Stainless-steel blade

• The blade is made from 3 mm-thick N690Co, a stainless steel from Böhler. Enriched with carbon and cobalt, it provides a durable cutting edge and good wear resistance. This steel is notably used by the French Army.
• The flat grind provides excellent versatility for everyday cutting tasks.
• A swedge is cut to refine the blade tip.

Purple Micarta handle

• Micarta is a robust composite made by stacking layers of cloth, paper or linen fibre impregnated with resin and then compressing them under heat. The material has a matte appearance, a slightly rough texture and excellent grip even when the hand is wet. It resists water, impacts and temperature changes well.
• A false piece in the complementary colour, yellow, heightens the contrast.

• The satin-finished cutting edge contrasts with the raw mill surface, highlighting the blade geometry.
• Machined and bead-blasted pivot screw.
• Grooves on the blade spine improve grip.
