The Puukko

Inspiration and design

The “Puukko” knife - Poplar is inspired by the traditional Finnish tool designed as an everyday companion. Used both for carving wood and for precision work, the puukko is known for its robustness, functional simplicity and excellent handling.

Atelier Legoff offers a contemporary version here, faithful to the Nordic spirit while adding a French handcrafted touch. Its understated line, straight blade and comfortable handle make it a reliable tool designed to last.

Stainless-steel blade

• Made from 3 mm-thick N690Co by German steelmaker Böhler. With a high carbon content and added cobalt, this material provides a tough cutting edge and resilience under intensive use; it is selected by the French Army for equipment issued to its forces.
• The flat grind provides excellent versatility across different cutting tasks.

Poplar handle

• Poplar (Populus) is a soft, lightweight wood often chosen for its gentle shades and discreet grain. Its colour ranges from light beige to slightly golden tones, sometimes marked by flamed grain or small knots.
• The scales are fitted over a coloured fibreglass spacer, creating a reference to the French flag along the spine.
• Rivets combined with rosettes secure the handle to the tang, providing strength and durability.
• This model is shaped and assembled by hand in our workshop in Courpière.

Appearance and details

• The satin-finished cutting edge contrasts with the raw mill surface, highlighting the blade geometry.
• The handle is treated with linseed oil and beeswax for a soft, warm feel.
