Historical inspiration for the “Diderot” Art Knife - Mammoth Ivory

The “Diderot” Art Knife - Mammoth Ivory, revisited by Atelier Legoff, is inspired by 18th-century forms such as those made in the workshops of Langres, the philosopher’s birthplace. His father, Didier Diderot, worked there as a master cutler and was recognised as cutler to the king. This piece pays tribute to that discreet but essential heritage: restrained, functional craftsmanship carried out with care. Far from a demonstration piece, this knife takes up the simple lines of a pocket object that could have been found in the hands of an Enlightenment man.

Mechanism

• The slipjoint system provides blade retention in both the open and closed positions. Retention is supplied by the spring and a lug that engages the blade, providing safer use.
• The kick stop prevents the cutting edge from dulling against the bottom of the spring.

High-end stainless-steel blade

• Made from 2.5 mm-thick RWL34, this powder-metallurgy steel offers high hardness and remarkable cutting performance. Its martensitic structure and fine grain allow a carefully executed polish.
• The flat grind provides excellent versatility for different cutting tasks.
• The raised nail nick on the blade helps open the knife.

Mammoth-ivory handle

• Mammoth ivory is a natural fossil material from prehistoric tusks found in Siberian permafrost. Unlike elephant ivory, which is now prohibited, this is an ancient and legal material valued for its density, smooth feel and naturally light colour. The white core of the ivory, free from visible veining, provides a restrained, luminous finish.
